How’s This for Motivation!

I have loved Mary Karr and her words for decades. Decades. I’ve read everything she’s written more times than I can remember.

I’ve attended her author lectures and had her autograph my books.

I’ve missed my stop on a New York City bus because I was knee-deep in her words.

I’ve dog-eared, underlined and made her words my screen saver.

I think you get the point.

When you write, or when you want to write, finding a voice that jumps off the page and shows you it’s possible is nothing short of magic. This is what Mary Karr does for me. Her words are magic to me.

If you haven’t read The Liar’s Club stop what you’re doing and read it. I’ll sound a bit like a film trailer, but trust me when I say, you will laugh, cry, almost throw up, and marvel at her ability to so easily put you in the middle of her east Texas childhood.

This morning I got an email from BookBub  — offering the 20th anniversary edition of The Liar’s Club — and it spurred me to Tweet about my love for this book and my admiration for Ms. Karr.

Within what seemed like seconds, I got a notification that she had liked my Tweet.

Just in case you don't understand what this means to me: I wrote a couple sentences and Mary Karr read them and liked what I wrote. Maybe you think that’s silly or small but to me it’s everything.

I do struggle with writing. I know many of us do. I've been writing a memoir for a long time, longer than I care to mention.

This morning I was gifted a huge dose of motivation and I’m not wasting a minute.
